Kinect - 3D Scan - for robot cutting later

Okay.. So, we are going to take sculpture and cut it out of massive stone and wood using an ABB robot arm. I need to learn how to scan in 3D via Kinect. I'm going to track some of my progress here.

KINECT-
?1)does Kinect need to be a certain model? is there a nec difference?
?2)what software for scanning?
A-OpenKinect? or "I used pixelnerve's CLNUI for Java under processing. It gave me an error when trying to run but it compiles fine. It should also be working fine under Eclipse."
?3)how do i merge the multiple scans? are scanned surfaces enough to get data for 3D cutting with a robot arm?
A-"Meshlab Plugin for Kinect. Just a straigforward incorporation of OpenKinect" - what is that.. how do i install it..

I haven't ever "compiled" a program.. I'm guessing it's not super hard.. I just don't know how to do it; making it impossible.. for now. :)
